What is Songwriting like?
*Students do not need to know how to play the piano or other instruments to join and be successful in songwriting class.

As a child, I loved writing songs. I even formed a singing group called "Path" with my friends and took it pretty seriously. Somehow, adult life seems to knock out many creative ways to find joy.

Here at the Creative Arts Dance Center, we value kids' creative voice. Songwriting is one of the beautiful ways kids can express their voices. It's not about pursuing songwriting as a career, it is about having an expressive tool to navigate the pain and joy of life. That is what eventually brought me back to songwriting as an adult -- sometimes, when I really felt something, a song spilled out. It expressed something I couldn't express any other way.

Practicing creativity -
In every class, we teach creative confidence. We experientially help kids wrestle through their own creative process and problem solve any blocks they have. Kids will make their own decisions, and see their vision come to reality, all with an adult teaching and coaching them through the creative process.
Students will learn:
Elements of poetry -
Students will study the rhyme, iambic pentameter, syllables, and other elements of poetry including alliteration, consonance, and more.

Elements of music -
Students will begin learning the fundamentals of music, including chords, melodies, rhythms, and basic piano appreciation.

Songwriting form -
We will focus on verse/chorus structure and learn one of the most widely used formulas for writing songs. Students will analyze their favorite songs and learn go-to techniques for making catchy songs that really work. Students will be able to identify different parts of a song
Create a momento to always remember -
One of the best parts of songwriting class is that each student will have an informal recording of their 100% original song (or multiple!) We guarantee each kiddo will write at least one song and we will record it informally for you to have forever.
